Russia as a Global Player

Brief description

Students will gain knowledge of the basic developments in Russian domestic, economic, and foreign policy since 1992. They will obtain an overview of Russia's constitutional law, its demographic development, its party system, its elite recruitment, and its civil society. Students will gain insight into the reform of the constitution, the restructuring of the party system, the increasing curtailment of the rights of civil society, the expansion of control over the media and the weakening of finance and big business. In addition, the question of Russia's position in international politics is examined, the revisionism of Russian foreign policy is highlighted and Russia's actions in recent and current (violent) conflicts are studied

Learning outcome

After successful completion of the course, students can:

  • understand the main features of Russian domestic, foreign and economic policy
  • have an overview of the Russian constitution
  • understand the basic ruling practices of the Putin era
  • describe the course and structure of Russia's demographic development on the basis of empirical data and explain its significance for the political development of the country
  • describe Russia's role and behaviour in international politics and explain it using the example of (violent) conflicts with Russian participation.
